Overview of Note Taking
WATCH:
In this video, you will learn about the importance of taking notes and how to prepare for taking notes before a lecture.
PRACTICE:
Before attending your next class, prepare to take notes by doing the following:
- Do the assigned reading and take notes on it.
- Write down any questions you have about the topic.
- Review notes from previous lectures.
- Review any end-of-chapter questions.
- Bring your reading notes and any questions you have to class.
How to Take Cornell Notes
WATCH: In this video, you will learn about one specific style of note taking, known as Cornell Notes.
PRACTICE:
- Try taking Cornell Notes in one of your classes. Be sure to actively listen and use abbreviations.
- Within 12-24 hours after class, complete the keywords and questions in the left margin and the summary at the bottom of your notes.
Reformatting Notes
WATCH: In this video, you will learn about what to do with your notes after you have taken them.
PRACTICE:
- Reformat notes that you have recently taken in class. For example, if you took Cornell notes, you might reformat them by creating a timeline or mind map.
- Use these sample reformatted notes as inspiration for your own reformatted notes.
- Use these question stems to predict potential test questions from your notes.
